报告题目/Title: We Still Can’t Get Enough of Layers…… but Why?

报告摘要/Abstract:

Since Prandtl introduced the boundary layer, “effect of friction are experienced verynear an object moving through a fluid”, more than a hundred years has beenpassed, the study of boundary layer behavior has been still a focus ofscientific research in many different disciplines. Inspired by a series worksof Gottlieb-Shu in mid-90th on the Gibbs phenomenon, we design a specialalgorithm to obtain correct solutions from oscillatory solutions for singularlyperturbed convection-diffusion equation in one spatial dimension. We also studythe overshoot of the cubic spline (and likewise other higher-order splines)approximation to discontinuous data. Finally, some superconvergence issues ofnumerical approximation for singularly perturbed problems that have boundarylayer behaviors will also be discussed.


报告人简介/About the speaker:

张智民(Zhimin Zhang),计算数学专家。中国科技大学本科及硕士,美国马里兰大学博士,现为美国韦恩州立大学及北京计算科学研究中心教授。入选教育部长江学者讲座教授(2010.4--2012.7)。 "Mathematics of Computation" and"Journal ofScientific Computing" 等多个国际计算数学杂志编委,广东省计算数学重点实验室学术委员会委员。在中国主持国家基金委重点项目,面上项目各一项。主持10项美国国家基金会项目,发表140 SCI论文。他提出的多项式保持重构(Polynomial Preserving RecoveryPPR)方法2008年被国际上广为流行的大型商业软件 COMSOL Multiphysics 采用,并使用至今。
